Flyfishing for freshwater trout is a popular pastime in the Snowy Mountains region, making a great reason to come to the region in the spring, summer and autumn months. Flyfishing is a relaxing, meditative sport and lucky fishes might spot platypus, birds or wombats and just enjoy the peace of spending unhurried time in a beautiful natural setting. Catching a trout large enough to keep (25 centimetres or more) is just an added bonus to a fun hour or two spent in the river.
At Big Yard Farm, our guests enjoy exclusive access to 500-metres of riverfront on the Mowamba River, renowned for its blue-ribbon trout fishing. In the fishing season you’ll have the chance to snare in prized brown, rainbow, and brook trout.
The Big Yard Farm stretch of the Mowamba River is narrow, and bushy areas mean you may need to adapt your technique with a shorter cast, nonetheless it does offer a calm, fun and fulfilling fishing adventure.
We provide two rods, two sets of waders and a selection of flies for our guests to try their hand at fly fishing right on the farm. Please be mindful of platypus who live in the river’s shady nooks and coves.
Each year, anglers are allowed to fish flowing waters from the October long weekend until the June long weekend. Fishing is prohibited from the June long weekend until the October long weekend to allow trout to spawn in peace. This seasonal regulation ensures the sustainability of fish populations and the preservation of the region’s natural ecosystem.
When fishing is not permitted in the river in winter, guests at Big Yard Farm can try fishing in the lower and upper dams on the property. These dams are likely home to fish and yabbies, providing another great angling experience for our guests. Whether you’re new to the game or a seasoned angler, our serene dams offer a tranquil setting to hone your skills and hopefully reel in some catches.
